Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between an Outing and a Sighting?

An Outing records birds observed during a birding session or walk. Depending on permissions and device availability, BirdCheck can also track distance, steps, and route information.

A Sighting allows you to quickly record birds without starting a full outing.

Is an Apple Watch required?

No. BirdCheck can be used independently on an iPhone. The Apple Watch provides additional convenience for recording birds during outings.

Why does BirdCheck request location access?

Location access allows BirdCheck to record outing routes, associate sightings with places, and display observations on maps.

Location access is optional, and the iPhone and Apple Watch may request permissions separately.

Why does my Apple Watch say it is checking with my iPhone?

BirdCheck uses the paired iPhone for important speech-processing and record-saving operations.

For the best experience, keep your paired iPhone nearby and connected when using voice features on Apple Watch.

Why do some voice requests take longer?

Speech recognition and language interpretation can take several seconds. Processing time may vary depending on device conditions and whether Apple speech or language-model resources need initialization.

Where is my birding history stored?

BirdCheck stores personal records on your device and can use Apple’s iCloud services to synchronize information when available and enabled.

Can I back up my records?

Yes. BirdCheck includes backup and restore features for personal birding information.

Keep backup files secure because they may contain personal records, locations, and photos.

What if my Life List or outings appear to be missing?

First, confirm that you are using the correct Apple Account and that iCloud is available.

Allow time for synchronization.

Do not delete BirdCheck or create a replacement Life List as a troubleshooting step. Contact support before taking actions that might affect your saved records.

Can I change permissions after installation?

Yes. Location, microphone, speech recognition, motion, photo, and Apple Health permissions can be managed using the appropriate settings on your Apple devices.
